When you have a good amount of stale bread sitting in your bread cupboard, but don't know what to do with it, why not try making easy peasy Homemade Croutons! It takes in total less than 15 minutes and tastes so much better than what you buy at the store. Just cut into cubes, season, toss in olive oil and spread out on a sheet pan, broil for about 8 minutes and voila!

Now, I had a good amount of homemade sourdough baguette left over and realized I could use it for my chicken salad that we were having for dinner. The Homemade Croutons turned out to be the star of the show. The next day, I used the rest of store bought garlic bread and did the exact same thing. So much better than throwing away perfectly good bread.

Homemade Croutons

Ingredients

  • Stale bread

  • 2-4 tablespoons olive oil

  • 1-2 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp ground black pepper

  • 1-2 tsp ground garlic powder

  • 1-2 tsp dried basil (or any other dried herbs you fancy) (optional)

Directions

  1. Pre-heat the oven, and have the setting set to broiler.

  2. Depending on how much stale bread you have, cut into thin strips horizontally, and then into 1/2-inch to 1-inch cubes (size depends on your preference). Place the cubed bread into a medium bowl.

  3. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder and herbs of your choice, or you can omit the herbs. Drizzle the olive oil to coat every bread piece. Toss really well with your hands, or spoons, until everything is well coated.

  4. Broil for about 8 minutes, or until the bread is a rich golden brown and crispy.

  5. Add to your salad, soup, or as a snack, or store for up to 2 days. I guarantee, these won't last long!
