This traditional French Toast is all about adding more flavor to the batter!

When I began making French Toast years ago, it dawned on me that the batter is a perfect opportunity to add more flavor. I used to think it was at the end with all of the finished toppings, but that could be a bit much for some people, and you could end up with soggy bread. So, I decided to add some additional ingredients to pump up the volume on my French Toasts without the need to add more toppings!
French Toast
Yields: 8 slices of bread
Total-time: 20 minutes
Ingredients
5-6 eggs
1/3 cup non-dairy milk, or regular milk
1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/2 tsp pure almond extract
1 tbsp sugar, or monk fruit sweetener
1/2 tsp salt
real maple syrup
powder sugar (optional)
*I like to add 1/4 cup of boiled cider, and/or 1/4 cup orange juice with some orange zest to really add another element of flavor. The flavors will pop because the bread will soak up all of those amazing flavors!
Directions
Pre-heat a large skillet with 1/4 tbsp of butter. Let the butter melt, then use a brush to spread the melted butter to coat the pan. You may need to add more right before you add your bread. You want there to be hot fresh melted butter right before you add the bread. This will add flavor and crunch to your French Toast.
In a medium bowl, wide enough to fit your bread slices, add the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, almond extract, sugar, and salt. This is also when you can add boiled cider, or zest from an orange...be creative!
Use a whisk to blend everything together evenly.
Use a fork and place your bread flat side down into the batter. Flip the bread once it is coated and repeat on the other side.
Quickly, add the coated bread to your hot and buttered pan. You can add a couple of slices, or just two at a time. Cook each side about 3-5 minutes.
Warm up some real maple in a jar, set aside.
Once both sides are a dark golden color, place on a plate and drizzle your maple syrup and sprinkle some powder sugar.
OPTION: If you like to add some yummy toppings, you can add whip cream, or fresh, thinly sliced fruit around or on top of your French Toast, or, some roasted chopped nuts. Enjoy!
